Watermelon is a Funk Rock band stationed in New York City. The band’s unique sound is formed from the dynamic interplay of two singers and a driving power trio, producing a sound that has been called raucous rock ‘n’ roll with a punch of funk and undertones of hip hop. While the band’s spirit can be traced to the revelry and comradery of Sly and the Family Stone, the band does not shy away from such diverse influences as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Funkadelic, and Talking Heads. Seeking to break down all barriers with the audience, Watermelon lives for the live experience.

Work. The term is one rich with layers. Work is Bern & the Brights’ latest EP, and the broad scope of the record’s title could not be more appropriate. Some songs’ themes literally tie into “labor,” providing a commentary on the suffering economy and the everyday person’s basic longing to be happy and free, as opposed to strained to no end, struggling to only keep afloat. Other songs deal with the work of romantic relationships, the work of introspection, the work of keeping up your spirits and holding onto what matters.
Bern & the Brights formed in 2008 and have since been sharing their brand of danceable, romantic nerd-rock. Their first gig was held during the closing night of a local bookstore. They have since acquired an unusual number of fans who are librarians, vagrant café rats, and introverted record collectors. Their sound can be described as familiar but fresh, warm, and feverously energetic. This new record, with its guitar-laden rock at the foreront, should be played loudly on a long drive.

The Van Allen Belt is an audio/visual group of performers who take name from the torus of energetic charged particles around Earth, and indeed, this show is a radio-active experience. Even if this shape-shifting drama knocks you off your feet, the home truths in the lyrics will apply the requisite damp cloth to your sweaty forehead. Destiny is on their side and success will be theirs, so join up before it gets too crowded.
LOVELY IN AKRON OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO:
https://vimeo.com/21813790
An ancient Norse myth, Lovely In Akron unfolds with the release of Fayiro, queen of the forgotten. Doomed to a life of marginalization, Fayiro curses her unknowing captors with a series of sacred objects. Each object represents a distraction in the mind of humanity, turning focus away from the sacred feminine. Once the objects are removed from her cardboard chrysalis, Fayiro is allowed one night to consume the unwitting horde and release her boundless creative energies. The characters of Fayiro, Grampoltime, Dinbry, and Snoo are each played by Tamar Kamin, Tom Altes, Ben Ferris and Scott Taylor, known collectively as The Van Allen Belt.

Black Checker: A rock band from Washington, DC.
According to Jim Cordes, the lead singer and songwriter for the band, “We play fast, exciting rock songs that we think folks are going to enjoy.” With a live set brimming with energetic, up tempo numbers, Black Checker is a group that prides itself on its ability to assemble accessible tunes that feature brisk, rowdy arrangements and push the boundaries of the traditional power trio.
The band cites influences such as Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, The Replacements, and Television as informing their brand of fast-paced, yet tuneful pop-punk.
Here’s what David Hintz of the blog DC Rock Live had to say about Black Checker’s live show:
“These guys bring more power pop to a punk sound and it’s a successful, balanced marriage between the two styles… the guitar sounds great, the vocals quite good, and the rhythm section has a fun careening feel to it.”
